Boardman ADV 8.9E Bike Review

Boardman ADV 8.9E Bike

Nicknamed the ‘professor’ due to his meticulous approach to cycling, former pro and national treasure Chris Boardman also has a hand in designing a popular and eponymous range of bicycles. And like some freewheeling Dr Frankenstein, he’s recently harnessed the power of electricity to bring his latest creations to life.

Freshly escaped from the lab at the Boardman Performance Centre, along with two e-assist hybrids, is this radical electric adventure bike. Called the Boardman ADV, like the rest of the range it uses a top-spec 4.6kg Fazua EvationDrive system and integrated battery to produce 250 watts of assistance.

However, with a slack head angle and 38mm Schwalbe G-One Speed tires, the ADV is also off-road capable. Backed up further by a SRAM Apex 1×11 group set and hydraulic discs, we reckon it’s an unexpectedly handsome brute too.

‘E-bikes have captured people’s imagination and always put a smile on your face,’ Boardman told us. ‘E-bike tech has evolved very quickly, though, and not all of the early starters were reliable or aesthetically pleasing enough. We spent a long time investigating which system to utilize.’

Settling on the Fazua EvationDrive, our current favorite system, Boardman describes using it as like ‘riding with the strongest tailwind you can imagine.’ Taking that trait and transferring it to the trails, we reckon this is one e- bike you could get up to some serious mischief aboard.
