Focus Jam2 Carbon 29 Bike Review

Focus Jam2 Carbon 29 Bike

TGrailWhen mankind went into space, booster rockets did all the legwork, taking them to the edge of the atmosphere and allowing the main module to go where no human had gone before. Focus’s Tailored Energy Concept takes a similar approach, with a modular removable battery that doubles the capacity, so you can get to the trails other e-bikes can’t reach.

Concealed sleekly within the carbon down tube is Focus’s 378Wh battery. The smaller capacity of the internal battery combined with the lightweight carbon frame means the Focus is exceptionally light for an e-bike. In this stripped back, minimal configuration it handles as close to a regular mountain bike as any e-bike we’ve ridden.

But then slide the optional TEC pack onto the down tube, attach the clever umbilical cord with its magnetic connections and you have the range to ride all day for the ultimate assisted adventures. Powering the Jam2 Carbon 29 is a Shimano STEPS M8000 drive system. It’s really intuitive to use, with easily accessible controls and a compact display, tucked neatly behind the bars.

At your disposal are three color-coded modes — Eco, Trail and Boost — as well as a walk mode for those rare occasions when you have to get off and push. The modes are accessed with a proper paddle-style shifter, which integrates nicely with the dropper remote and brake lever.

And internal routing through the stem and handlebars keeps all the additional wiring neatly out of sight. To cope with the extra mass, Focus has wisely gone for Shimano Deore brakes with heat-dissipating Ice-Tech pads and a big 200mm front rotor. And with a 34-46 low gear, you can still keep your cadence high on the climbs to maximize the power from the Shimano M8000 motor.

Suspension is handled by Focus’s Fold suspension system and delivers 140mm of travel at the rear from a Fox Float rear shock and this is matched perfectly up front with a 140mm Fox 34 Rhythm fork. The Fold design really wants to settle into the sag position, and there’s enough progression to cope with big hits and sudden compressions.

The geometry combines a steep seat angle with long chainstays to make it an accomplished climber, and yet the slack head angle and long wheelbase means it’s just as planted downhill. Keep it svelte and revel in the minimal build for shorter rides on your home trails, or attach the extra TEC pack and point it at the horizon. With the Jam2 the choice is yours.
