Could this be the world’s flashest bit of bike kit? Quite possibly. Well, it was inspired by the Hoff!
Hands up who remembers Knight Rider? Well, the crime-fighting franchise that featured a talking car called KITT and David Hasselhoff in nut-crunchingly tight jeans would appear to be the inspiration behind ProViz’s latest cycling jacket.
Firstly, Proviz has called it NightRider (bit of a giveaway, that) and secondly, it features a red, KITT-style light bar down the back of the jacket. Yes, a light bar that actually lights up! In fact, the jacket features three light bars in total, with two white ones on the backs of the arms as well.
These are connected to a battery pack that lives in its own little inside pocket at the front of the jacket. This battery is both removable and rechargeable via a micro USB cable and also features a built-in power-button that operates the lights.
Press once for rapidly blinking lights, press it twice and the blinking gets considerably calmer, a third press produces a constant beam, while a fourth one turns the lights off. Run time is approximately 12 hours on constant beam and up to 72 hours in flashing mode.
The jacket’s shell is made from high-viz waterproof polyester, and has reflective detailing throughout to ensure that you’ll get seen by other road users in even the grimmest conditions.
With Velcro straps on the sleeves and a waterproof full-length zipper, the NightRider ensures you’re well sealed in from the elements, although, vents on the back and beneath the arms, plus a cotton mesh lining all help with breathability and ventilation.
Other features include two zipped pockets to the side and a third to the rear, and once the battery is removed the whole thing is machine washable, too-even the lights! Available in XS-XXL we found the fit on our medium a little snug so consider going up a size particularly as you’re likely to be wearing a few layers beneath.
